IS IT EXPENSIVE TO OWN A HORSE?

The initial cost of purchasing a horse can vary greatly depending on the breed, age, and level of training the horse has. Monthly full service care at Sunset Trails ranges between $240 to $425 per month. All boarders have access to our indoor arena, 2 outdoor arenas, tack room, wash rack, and 2,700 acres of groomed horseback riding trails directly across the street. When compared to the cost of other activities like competitive soccer, dance, or gymnastics horse ownership is just as competitive.

IS HORSEBACK RIDING SAFE?

Like any sport horseback riding has risks. At Sunset Trails, we are constantly focused on safety. We work to teach our young riders the responsibility and awareness it takes to safely interact with horses. All of our lesson horses are very experienced and comfortable with novice riders.


HOW DO YOU GET STARTED RIDING HORSES?

Most students start in our Beginner Horsemanship class. Beginner Horsemanship is a six-week group lesson that covers all of the basics of horsemanship. Students will learn safety, grooming, horse care, nutrition, colors and breeds, leading, basic riding skills, and much more. After Beginner Horsemanship student either choose to move up though other levels of group lessons or start with private lessons.


DO YOU HAVE TO OWN A HORSE TO RIDE AT SUNSET TRAILS STABLES?

No! You do not have to own your own horse to ride horses at Sunset Trails. Most riders gain equine experience by taking horseback riding lessons prior to purchasing a horse.

HOW DO YOU ENROLL IN CLASSES & CAMPS?

If you are interested in enrolling a group lesson or a camp, you can enroll online by clicking the “book now” button or print and mail the enrollment form and payment. You can also call the Sunset Trails office to enroll over the phone. Private lessons, trail rides and petting zoos must be scheduled over the phone.


WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE TO RIDE?

We require that all participants wear closed toed shoes, long pants, and a horseback-riding helmet. That’s it! Sunset Trails can even provide the helmet if you do not wish to purchase your own. Sunset Trails provides all of the grooming equipment and tack necessary for riding.


DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE EXPERIENCE TO RIDE A HORSE?

Sunset Trails offers all levels of riding instruction. Our staff is experienced at instructing first time riders. We also offer lessons at intermediate and advanced levels.


WHAT AGE CAN YOU START RIDING AT SUNSET TRAILS?

Children can start with private lessons, group lessons, and camps at age six. We also offer Texas Tots, which is a class for four and five years old. Kids love our birthday parties at Sunset Trails!


CAN ADULTS TAKE LESSONS?

Horseback riding lessons are not just for children! Adults can participate in a group Adult Horsemanship class or in private lessons.


WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PRIVATE & GROUP LESSON?

Private lessons offer one on one instruction. Private lessons are $70 per hour and can be scheduled more flexibly. Group lesson vary in cost depending on the class level. Upper level group lessons have a maximum of four students with two instructors. Introductory group lesson have a larger ratio of student to instructors. Many students prefer group lesson because they feel it is beneficial to see others riding.
